2023 Miami Open Announces Former Grand Slam Champions, Dominic Thiem and Emma Raducanu, as Wild Cards
As one of the fastest-growing tournaments in US tennis, the Miami Open continually impresses year after year. The 2023 edition of the Miami Open, presented to Itaú, has begun filling out the wild card recipients for the event. Joining those at the Hard Rock Stadium this year will be the 2020 and 2021 US Open champions. The prolific title-winning Austrian Dominic Thiem will join British sensation Emma Raducanu as two wildcards for this year’s event.
Both will join the event, starting on March 19th and running through to April 2nd. Giving fans over two weeks of high-class tennis, the arrival of two stars and Grand Slam champions only deepens the talent pool waiting to take to the court.
Raducanu rose to fame in 2021 after earning the WTA Newcomer of the Year award. This came after her incredible US Open win, becoming the first player to win the tournament as a qualifier – and winning the tournament without dropping a set. Across ten tennis matches, her incredible feats saw the then-18-year-old propelled to the peak of women’s tennis. However, injuries have slowed her progress since she has still climbed as high as 10th in the WTA Rankings in recent times. The Toronto-born Briton will participate in the Miami Open for the second time.
Thiem comes along as one of the highest-performing players on the ATP circuit. A 2020 US Open champion and a finalist at both the Australian Open (2020) and Roland Garros (2019, 2020), Thiem boasts an exceptional career record of 17 wins from 28 title matches. With 17 wins from 28 finals, the Austrian is regarded as among the best players in tennis today. He previously played at the Miami Open six times, though this will be his first appearance since 2019.
The biggest Miami Open yet looks set to unfold in style. The Miami Open has grown in prestige and stature on the tennis calendar, and today is one of the more significant non-major events. Operated and owned by IMG, the Miami Open has become one of the ATP Masters 1000 Series events on the calendar, one of nine, and a WTA 1000 event. Thanks to where it is based, the Miami Open continually ranks as one of the tennis calendar’s most anticipated non-Major ranking events. The chance for players to experience one of the most beloved cities in America and the opportunity to participate in a growing tournament ensures the Miami Open ranks highly among fans.
Given its location, a party atmosphere is a norm in the stands as fans turn out to provide raucous support to all participants. On top of top-class tennis, fans can also look forward to excellent off-court entertainment, top-class cuisine, and local artwork. Extra green spacing around the Hard Rock Stadium has been added, too, making it the ideal venue to soak up the early spring weather.
With some top-class wildcards coming along, the 2023 edition of the Miami Open has the chance to exceed all that has come before. Be sure to tune in when the action starts later this month.
