Indie Night Film Festival Makes Grand Entrance In Atlanta
On a rainy evening in Atlanta, the Plaza Theater was the stage for the Indie Night Film Festival. Despite the weather, a sold-out audience attended the festival, which brought together creatives, celebrities, and college students alike. Founded in Los Angeles by Dave Brown, the festival has been a safe haven for creatives to showcase their work and network in circles previously out of reach for over 11 years.
The event was hosted by actor Morris Chestnut and received support from a variety of attendees, including actors Clifton Powell, A’zaria Carter, Jill Marie Jones, Terri J. Vaughn, Karon Joseph Riley, Tre Rogers, Mike Merrill, and many more. Dave Brown expressed that the event is about building a community and bringing writers, directors, actors, and producers together. He believes that many talented individuals lack direction and opportunities to showcase their work.
“Even if you land in Hollywood, you can’t just walk in and say ‘Hey, I’m a writer, take me in,’ or I’m a director or actor. You have to be in that community of people. It’s about establishing yourself in what you want to do and letting people see you show your work,” said Brown.
Brown, who attended Morehouse College, decided to bring the festival to his old stomping grounds of Atlanta after the success of the Los Angeles festival. The goal of the Indie Night Film Festival is to provide a platform for filmmakers to showcase their work and to help newcomers network with established professionals. Brown decided to expand the event through hosting it in select cities, so those who can’t attend popular film festivals in other cities and countries can have the opportunity to participate.
Chestnut added his input by advising individuals to stay consistent and optimistic about their projects. “We all have hopes and dreams, and whenever we do a project, we’re excited and optimistic about that project because we’re hoping that people see it and it takes us to the next level. Even if it doesn’t, just stay consistent in doing what you’re doing,” Chesnut said.
In Los Angeles, Indie Night Film Festival is held as a weekly event, but Brown wants to change the Atlanta version and other city versions to be monthly events. Additionally, Brown intends to bring the work seen at the Indie Night Film Festivals hosted in other cities back to Hollywood.
