Mekonnen Knife on Disney Fame, Dancing Through Life, and Staying Real
Mekonnen Knife is having a moment. As one of the breakout stars of ZOMBIES 4: Dawn of the Vampires, he brings heart, humor, and undeniable charisma to the role of Vargas, the kind of character who cracks a joke one second and lifts up his friends the next. “He’s not trying to act cool or be someone he’s not,” Mekonnen says. “He’s just himself.
And that kind of realness is something I really admire.” It’s clear that Vargas resonates with him, not just as a role, but as a reflection of the energy he brings into the world.
The Disney franchise’s latest chapter takes its message of inclusion to new heights, spotlighting characters who don’t just tolerate differences but thrive because of them. “ZOMBIES 4 shows that being different is something to be proud of,” Mekonnen says. “It’s about working together, lifting each other up, and recognizing what makes each person exceptional.”
It’s a timely message, especially for a generation growing up in a world that still struggles with acceptance. Mekonnen’s performance taps into that energy, delivering both laughs and layered emotion.
What some fans might not know is that Mekonnen is a trained dancer, and it shows. Whether he’s in a big musical number or just walking into a room on camera, there’s a rhythm and presence to his performance that feels grounded and intentional. “Dance taught me rhythm, control, and confidence,” he says. “It helps me stay present and bring more to every moment.”
His background in movement gives him a deeper connection to his characters, and it adds an extra layer of depth to his acting.
Off screen, Mekonnen is just as thoughtful. Born in Ethiopia and raised between there and Australia, he credits that experience with shaping his worldview. “It taught me to value diversity, family, and community,” he says. He’s also passionate about mental health, having struggled with anxiety himself. “It affects how we see ourselves and connect with people, but not everyone talks about it. I think being open helps others feel less alone.” That openness is exactly what makes him feel so grounded, even as his star continues to rise.
So what’s next for Mekonnen Knife? First up is the Worlds Collide tour, a live celebration of the ZOMBIES and Descendants franchises that he promises will be “unforgettable.” Beyond that, he’s keeping his goals simple: grow, stay curious, and keep it real. “I just want to be a part of stories that matter,” he says. “And if I can help people feel seen along the way, even better.”
