Justice Carradine is The Contrast Man

The new normal is among us and luckily for us, we are adjusting (virtually) with Justice Carridine, who collected his popularity for creating Vine videos and doing music covers of some of the most iconic artists such as Zayn Malik, Post Malone and The 1975 to name a few. Justice created a video dedicated to the members of ‘GLAMSS,’ a collaborative all-girl ‘YouTube’ channel that features social-media influencers Alexia Raye, SelfieC, Lycia Faith, Gabby Berry, Queen Maya and Safari Gage. The Salt Lake, Utah native who is currently Los Angeles based has scored a record deal with Atlantic Records, home of GRAMMY Award winning Cardi B, Lizzo and Bruno Mars with a song he independently recorded in 3 hours titled “okay.” Which we found out was about a toxic relationship.

The singer, song writer, and social media maven has since released 3 wildly popular songs LIMBO, necessary Evil and dangerously in love. Although, music as been described as “healing” for the young musicians he’s also found himself in the fashion arenas.

Justice signed a modeling contract with NEXT Model Managment and has been apart of high profile campaigns for Puma, M&Ms, and Hollister.

What was it like having to shoot your own cover from your home due to social distancing and stay at home orders? Actually pretty fun! I (safely) shot it with my friend Maiya Buck so it felt like we were just hanging out. 

Speaking of stay at home orders. What are some of the things that you’ve done to occupy your time during the pandemic? I’ve been spending a lot of time in nature and working on new music. 

Have you written any new music during this time? How has the pandemic affected your creative process or do you feel more creative because the world has slowed down? Yes! I think with the amount of uncertainty and fear that’s in the world right now has helped me focus my creativity more and really get to know it. I think it’s helped me be more honest in my writing for sure. 

What other instruments do you play besides the guitar? Piano, uke, and I can kind of play the drums.

How do you feel about the “YouTube cover singer” title/stigma? Do you find yourself trying to break out of that label and prove your artistry is more than covers and 6 second vine videos or do you embrace the social media love? I embrace all the love, and I have never put myself in a box like that so it hasn’t been an issue.

You signed to Atlantic records which is really major. The roster at Atlantic is insane both past and present Cardi B, Ray Charles, Bruno Mars, The Rolling Stones and Lizzo to name a few. What was it like when you got the call that Atlantic wanted to sign you?  It was a pretty big moment for me. A couple months prior to singing, I wrote down that I was signed with Atlantic and to see it come to fruition made me feel nothing but grateful. 

Already being a huge social media sensation on your own, why did you choose to sign to a major label versus taking the independent route? I didn’t really think about it too much. It felt right so I went with it. 

So, one of my favorite songs by you is LIMBO. What is something that you’ve been in LIMBO about? I mean, the world is on ice right now so that’s been on my mind.

Avril Lavigne has been your biggest inspiration. What’s the coolest thing you can tell us about the skater boy singer that you’ve learned from her? To be unapologetically yourself. 

Are you writing every song or will you use other writers for the project? Most of the songs are written by me, but I love working with co-writers and there are some on this project.

The definition of Contrast is “to be strikingly different.” What makes you strikingly different? That I’m not afraid to tell the truth and that I am White Mountain Apache and Samoan.
