What Is 2017’s Song Of The Summer?

Ah, song of the summer. That one song you can’t escape and, despite your repeated protests as to why you don’t like it, the one song you secretly play the most in your car when you think no one’s watching. Having a song of the summer is nothing short of a right of passage for artists and groups. It’s a song that dominates the airwaves, charts, has a chorus you can’t get out of your head, and finds its way into everyday conversation. 2003 saw Beyonce and Jay-Z dominate with “Crazy In Love,” Rihanna became a household name with “Umbrella” in 2007, Katy started an iconic era with “California Gurls” in 2010, Miley reinvented herself with “We Can’t Stop” in 2013, The Weeknd went mainstream with “Can’t Feel My Face” in 2015 and Fifth Harmony proved they were a force to be reckoned with last year with “Work From Home.” But what will 2017’s song of the summer be?

A lot of music this summer’s music has been more about eliciting a feeling rather than strong choruses or iconic moments. It’s been more about that song that plays in the background during your beach party that you silently mouth the words too, rather than that song that you and your best friends drunkenly perform at karaoke. But there are a few gems out there right now that will be on the list when we look back years from now. Below are what we think are a few contenders for song of the summer!

  1. “Feels” – Calvin Harris feat. Pharrell Williams, Katy Perry, and Big Sean

This bouncy summer jam from Harris’ Funk Wav Bounces, Vol. 1, is one of this summer’s strongest contenders for song of the summer. It has a little bit of everything — catchy chorus and star power. Plus it touches on giving in to that inevitable summer love. “Don’t be afraid to catch feels…,” Katy croons. With this bop it’s hard not to.

2. “Wild Thoughts” – DJ Khaled feat. Rihanna and Bryson Tiller

As one of the comments under this video correctly states, “This should just be Rihanna feat. the others.” Ms. Fenty absolutely slays in every sense of the word on this cut from Khaled’s album Grateful. From the outfits to the vocals, Rihanna rightfully lays claim to Queen of the Summer. We bow down!

3. “Malibu” – Miley Cyrus

Miley loves a good summer comeback, and she takes it back to her roots in this breezy single from her yet untitled upcoming album. It’s not the Miley we’ve become accustomed to over the past few years, but the song’s simplicity makes it all the more catchy and meaningful. It bridges the gap between being something you can have on in the background and a song that you want to sing the lyrics out-loud to. It’s a welcome comeback.

4. “Perfect Places” – Lorde

Lorde has just released what will probably go down as one of, if not the, best albums 0f 2017, and the record’s second single is one of the few jams this summer that you can lose yourself in at the club or scream in the car.
